Fine lines and wrinkles can detract from your appearance, making you seem older or more tired than you really are. That is why we offer a number of treatments at our Darien, CT practice, including dermal fillers and facial cosmetic surgery to rejuvenate your appearance.
However, before you start planning your new look, it is important to understand that not all wrinkles are necessarily bad. In fact, some actually contribute to your uniqueness and help highlight your facial features. Today, Dr. Fredric Newman discusses dynamic vs. static wrinkles and explains the differences between the two.
Have you ever noticed the lines that appear when some individuals are expressing emotion? For example, when smiling, laugh lines may become noticeable around the mouth.
In the same way, frown lines may appear between the eyebrows in moments of sadness or anger. Maybe you notice forehead wrinkles when you are surprised or crow’s feet when you laugh. These are referred to as dynamic wrinkles, and they fade away just as quickly as they appear.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is an excellent way to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles while relaxing the associated muscles. By doing so, the repetitive muscle movements that cause the wrinkles are significantly reduced.
BOTOX is injected just below the surface of the skin and is commonly used to treat dynamic wrinkles around the lips, eyes, and forehead. To maintain results, BOTOX will need to be administered every three to four months.
Unlike their dynamic counterparts, static wrinkles remain on the face regardless of emotional expression. They are visible even when all associated muscles are relaxed, and they usually deepen as we grow older.
Static wrinkles develop due to collagen loss. As we age, the skin loses elasticity because the skin is not producing as much collagen as it once did. Because of this process, wrinkles that were once dynamic can become static.
These wrinkles commonly appear around the nose and mouth and can be exacerbated by genetics and poor lifestyle choices, such as an unhealthy diet or tobacco use.
For mild cases, static wrinkles can be reduced with dermal fillers, such as Radiesse®, Juvéderm®, or Sculptra®. These products help to hydrate the face and promote natural collagen production.
Commonly used to treat wrinkles on the lower third of the face, dermal fillers can also enhance hollowed cheeks or thin lips. In most cases, results can last up to one year.
More complex cases of static wrinkles can be successfully addressed with facial cosmetic surgery. Some of the most common procedures we offer at our practice include:
These procedures can be performed alone or in conjunction with one another to produce a natural-looking appearance. During an initial consultation with Dr. Newman, he can help you determine which procedures can offer the results you desire.
Wrinkles are simply a part of aging. If you are noticing the appearance of fine lines and creases, treatment at our cosmetic surgery practice can eliminate these signs of aging and create a more youthful, glowing appearance.
