The skin surrounding the eyes is very delicate, so it is not uncommon for patients to notice their first lines, wrinkles, and creases around the upper and lower eyelids. Because this skin is particularly thin, it also tends to lose its elasticity pretty early. The most effective way to reverse these signs of aging is through eyelid surgery. This procedure refreshes the appearance of the skin around the eyes and restores a more youthful aesthetic. Eyelid surgery recovery is fairly short and straightforward, making this procedure an excellent option for most patients. However, to further minimize the risk of any post-surgical complications, it is important that patients follow post-surgical care instructions. Incision Care
During eyelid surgery, an incision will be made near either the upper or lower eyelid (or both, depending on the patient’s needs). This incision will be sutured when the necessary alterations have been made. In the days after eyelid surgery, the incisions will begin to heal. A small scar will remain after the eyelids have fully healed, but should be very subtle and easily hidden in the folds of the eyelid. However, to ensure the incision heals properly, patients will need to provide adequate aftercare. Patients should apply ointment frequently to the incision site to ensure it stays lubricated. They should also be sure to keep the incision site clean; it can be cleaned with a warm, wet washcloth. Within two to seven days, the patient will return to have the stitches removed from the incision.
Managing Side Effects
Side effects are a normal part of any surgical recovery. The side effects of eyelid surgery are relatively minimal compared to other plastic surgery procedures, but it is good for patients to be prepared for how to manage side effects following treatment:
- Inflammation: Inflammation is the most common side effect of eyelid surgery. To keep swelling to a minimum, patients can apply ice packs or cold compresses to the eyes. Patients should also keep the head slightly elevated when resting, to prevent excessive blood flow to the eyes. Inflammation will gradually subside on its own over the first several weeks following surgery.
- Dry eyes: The eyes are likely to feel dry and itchy for the first several days after eyelid surgery. Artificial tears can be used as needed to keep the eyes moist. Patients should also avoid or limit activities that can increase dryness, such as reading, working on a computer, and wearing contact lenses. When outdoors, patients should wear sunglasses to protect the eyes from UV rays, wind, and other environmental elements.
- Discomfort: It is normal for patients to experience some degree of discomfort as they recovery from eyelid surgery. Pain medication can be used as needed to maintain a level of comfort. To avoid overly tiring the eyes, patients should take frequent naps during the early days of recovery. By getting plenty of rest, patients can ensure a speedy recovery with minimal discomfort.
